Out for a morning coffee and breakfast with my friend Dave Hoskin. We try to get together at least once a month to catch up on life, current events, reminisce about the old days, a little philosophy, politics, art, and always music, writers, and literature.
We were almost disoriented and at a loss for words when we pulled up to our favorite old breakfast place and found it closed. How could this be? I had a flashback to that scene of immense disappointment in National Lampoon’s Vacation when after their major cross country saga the Griswold’s finally arrive at Walley World, "America's Favorite Family Fun Park" only to find it’s closed down for two weeks.
We headed for Kent and driving down Meeker street through old town we saw Maggie’s with a crowd of people out front talking on the sidewalk. Let’s try here!
Based on the storefront I expected it to be a small place. I was surprised when I came through the door how large and roomy it is inside. It almost felt like a cafeteria and I noticed right away the mix of old timers, families, friends of all ages, people stopping in after church, and guys like us enjoying a Sunday morning out.
This is my first time here and I immediately felt at home. It’s unpretentious, not fancy, and welcoming. We were well taken care by three different gals who were awesome and fun. Each made sure we knew there was no hurry to eat and run.
I had scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon, and toast. I have to say the hash browns are some of the best ever, with some crunchy on the outside and moist and steamy on the inside. The bacon was exceptional. Four thick slices and just the way I like it, a little well done but not burnt. I do it up on occasions like this. It’s the only time I eat bacon anymore.
We were there about an hour and 45 minutes when I surrendered and stopped the coffee refills. I highly recommend this place and there’s plenty of room to bring the whole family or the gang from work. I’ll be back.
